We’ve all heard it said that your life can change in the blink of an eye. Well, mine literally changed with the click of a mouse. You see, in July of 2015 I had dinner with my cousins, Dan & Nancy of SV Karvi. I hadn’t seen them in years but as most families do these days we kept up with each other through Facebook. Dan and Nancy have been living on their sailboat for sometime and came to Florida to conduct some business. They arrived on July 8th, 2015 and my mom, Peggy, and I joined them for dinner. It was a wonderful evening. We reminisced about family and times gone by. During dinner our conversation turned to my current dating status where we discussed the horrors of internet dating and the fact that I had all but given up on finding a nice guy. Dan and Nancy told me about their very good friend, Baffler. That’s what they call him. His real name is Dan so they gave him a nickname to keep from confusing him and my cousin. They suggested that I check him out on Facebook and friend him. Nancy assured me that we are completely compatible. I gave the obligatory nod knowing there was no way on God’s green earth I was going to friend some strange guy who lived on his sailboat in Mexico! After all, I wasn’t that desperate to find a man.
We enjoyed several hours of great conversation and the evening ended far too quickly. Dan & Nancy were heading back to California the following day. We said our goodbyes and parted ways. After dropping my mother off I went home and decided to enjoy one last cocktail on my balcony before I turned in for the night. That’s when it happened. Yep, curiosity got the best of me so I got on Facebook to check out this Baffler character. I still was set on the fact that I would absolutely not communicate with him but you know, what harm could come in just looking at his page? Famous last words right???
The first thing I noticed was that he was really handsome and he had these absolutely amazing brown eyes with specs of gold in them. Oh yes, he had a great smile too! I loved the posts he had on his page and I particularly enjoyed the way his friends interacted with him. I sensed he was very well respected and loved by them. After about a half an hour of “spying” on him and not one but two cocktails later….it happened….CLICK went the mouse. I did exactly what I said I’d never do! I sent him a friend request with a private message. The moment I heard the click I panicked! “No, I didn’t mean it. Come back.” I yelled at the computer. But alas it was too late. My message was on the information superhighway headed straight to his inbox. All I could hope at that point was that he would ignore my request and I could drift into the abyss.
Two days went by and I hadn’t heard from him so I was certain I was in the clear. It was Friday and I was sitting outside enjoying the warm summer breeze as it drifted off the river behind my apartment. The night was clear and the nearly full moon cast a delicate blue light upon the water and mangroves across the way. As I sipped my cocktail I had no idea how my life was about to change.
