These photographs of Fatu Hiva show just a small portion of the beauty this island has to offer. This is the southern most island in the Marquesas group. The Bay of Virgins was originally called the Bay of Penises. Yes, that’s right. The reason for this is the phallic shaped rock outcroppings. The Judeo Christians who came through the area converting the islanders didn’t care for that name and renamed it the Bay of Virgins. Ironicaly they also went around the island “castrating” the tikis. There are still tikis all over the South Pacific Islands where the male genitalia have been hacked off. Sorry guys!
This is also the most photographed bay in all of the Marquesas and for good reason. It’s truly spectacular and when the sun is getting long in the tooth the golden rays reflect off the mountains making it a magical sight to behold.
