Vanua Levu, with its population of around 140K, is the second largest island in Fiji. It is to the north and east of Viti Levu and is a beautiful, more lush area than the southern island. While most cruisers tend to want to move west more quickly in an effort to find the crystal clear waters that are so prevalent in the western island groups, we chose to spend a few weeks exploring this beautiful gem. We, along with our friends Lutz & Gabi from SV SuAn, spent three weeks circumnavigating Vanua Levu and we are so happy we did so.
We visited villages that hadn’t seen outsiders in years and had virtually every anchorage to ourselves. Of course that’s until we reach Taveuni Island on the eastern side of Vanua Levu. This is a more resort like area and one that cruisers who do spend time here like the most. Even there we had a wonderful time.
